Flood Destroys 300 Houses In 5 LGs In Plateau

Four hours of rain lead to flooding  that destroyed over 300  houses in five local government areas of  Plateau State.

A source who spoke to our reporter from Kanam  local government area of the state said that many people are still missing while  livestock and  farmlands  have been washed away by the flood.

According to the source the people of the affected communities   are still counting their losses.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the rains, which started in the afternoon, lasted for close to four hours resulting to the  flood.

The executive secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Alhasan Barde, while confirming the incident on phone said he was   yet to receive accurate figures of the houses destroyed and those killed by the flood.

According to him, there was flooding  in Jos North , Barkin Ladi , Kanam and Shendam local government areas of the state with many homes destroyed.

He said ,    “As I speak with you I am on the spot  assessment  of the affected areas and will give you the exact figures after the assessment.”

He advised residents of the state not to build their homes around water ways.

It would be recalled that  the Plateau State government had at the beginning of this year’s rainy season through public service announcements on state owned media, appealed to residents living on waterways to relocate to the hinterlands to avoid possible flood.
