The Naval Command Headquarters yesterday confirmed the armed pirate attack on an oil vessel along the coast of Bayelsa State, kidnapping two American sailors among the crew aboard.

The abducted crew, according to security report, were the chief Engineer and the captain of the vessel.

In a dispatch report shown to LEADERSHIP in Bayelsa State, it was stated that a US-flagged, Edison Chouest-owned C-Retriever was attacked on Wednesday morning.

A senior members of the State Security Service (SSS) in Bayelsa confirmed that the security attaché with American Embassy in Abuja had contacted the office.

“We are aware of it.We are in touch with the American embassy. They are playing a crucial role at the rescue,” he said.

Confirming the kidnap,the Director of Naval Information, Commodore Kabiru Aliu, said the Nigerian Navy had received a report on the attack of a US vessel.

“We are aware of the  kidnap incident of the two American sailors and we have directed the central Naval Command to see to their rescue. So our men are on top of the situation,” he said.
