6 Dead, Nigerians Injured in Fresh Iranian Missile Strikes on UAE

At least six people were killed and 141 others injured, including Nigerians, after Iran launched a new wave of ballistic missiles and drones targeting the United Arab Emirates on March 14, according to the UAE Ministry of Defence. The ministry stated that its air defence systems successfully intercepted nine ballistic missiles and 33 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) during the assault, which authorities described as a continued escalation in the ongoing Middle East conflict."The UAE air defence systems on March 14 engaged nine ballistic missiles and 33 UAVs launched from Iran," the ministry said in a statement. Since the beginning of what it called "blatant Iranian aggression," UAE defences have intercepted a total of 294 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,600 UAVs.The attacks resulted in six fatalities, including nationals from the UAE, Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. The 141 injuries ranged from minor to moderate and affected residents and workers from numerous countries, including Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Pakistan, Iran, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Yemen, Uganda, Eritrea, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Comoros, Türkiye, Iraq, Oman, Jordan, Palestine, Ghana, Indonesia, and Sweden. While exact casualty locations were not disclosed, the strikes are believed to have targeted US-linked assets in the Gulf nation, amid retaliatory actions following recent US and Israeli military operations against Iranian targets. Iran has conducted similar attacks on other Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and Qatar, in recent days. The UAE remains a major destination for Nigerians seeking employment, travel, and transit. The incident has heightened concerns among the Nigerian community in the region, with some stranded individuals in affected Middle Eastern areas calling on the Nigerian government to arrange repatriation flights if the situation worsens.Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) officials noted that, as of earlier updates, no Nigerians in Iran itself had been directly affected by the conflict. The Nigerian Embassy in Iran has assisted some citizens in safely crossing into Armenia for evacuation. This report draws from statements by the UAE Ministry of Defence and Nigerian diaspora authorities. The broader regional conflict remains fluid, with ongoing diplomatic and military developments.
