NUC, World Bank Sign $65m Deal to Strengthen University Governance Standards

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has signed a $65 million agreement with the World Bank aimed at improving governance standards across Nigerian universities.The deal focuses on enhancing institutional management, transparency, accountability, and overall operational efficiency in the nation’s higher education system.According to details of the partnership, the funding will support key reforms including the development and implementation of modern governance frameworks, capacity building for university administrators and governing councils, and the adoption of digital tools for better institutional oversight.The initiative is expected to address long-standing challenges such as weak internal controls, financial management issues, and limited autonomy in some institutions, while aligning Nigerian universities with global best practices.NUC officials described the agreement as a major step towards repositioning Nigerian tertiary institutions for improved performance, competitiveness, and sustainable development.The project will likely include technical assistance, training programmes, and monitoring mechanisms to ensure effective utilisation of the funds and measurable improvements in university governance.This collaboration comes as part of broader efforts to strengthen the quality and relevance of higher education in Nigeria amid growing demands for better accountability in public institutions.
