Six Arrested as Mob Lynches Two Travellers Over False Kidnapping Claim in Kaduna

Tragedy struck in Gidan Kalu Village, Birnin Yero, Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State, as a mob brutally killed two men who were wrongly accused of being kidnappers.     The victims, identified as Muhammadu Sani, 45, and Aliyu Mohammed, 40, both from Umar Village in the same local government area, were travelling on a motorcycle to Tudun Wada, Zaria, on July 1 to visit their ailing uncle when the incident occurred.According to the Kaduna State Police Command, residents became suspicious upon seeing the pair riding a new motorcycle and raised an alarm by shouting “thieves.” In fear, the victims abandoned the motorcycle and fled, but they were pursued by an angry mob, beaten and lynched to death despite their pleas and explanations that they were innocent. Some members of the mob reportedly knew them.    Police operatives from the Birnin Yero Division swiftly responded to the report and arrested six suspects, including one Abdullahi Mukailu Kigo. The suspects have confessed to participating in the attack and are in custody, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend others involved.     The Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, strongly condemned the mob action, describing it as unlawful and unacceptable. He vowed that all those involved would be prosecuted regardless of their status.“The command condemns the incident in the strongest terms. All those found culpable, irrespective of their status, will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law,” the CP said.     Muhammad warned residents against resorting to jungle justice, stressing that every suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a competent court. He urged the public to report suspected criminals to security agencies instead of taking the law into their own hands.    This latest incident is the second major case of mob lynching in the area in recent weeks. Only weeks ago, a woman, Ummulkhairi Usman Aliyu, was beaten to death by a mob at Maraban Jos over similar false kidnapping allegations, sparking widespread outrage.   Rights groups and security officials continue to raise concerns over the rising cases of jungle justice in Kaduna State, which often claim innocent lives amid heightened insecurity.
