Senate Honors Fallen Security Personnel in Oyo Schoolchildren Rescue

The Nigerian Senate has identified four security operatives who paid the ultimate price during the daring rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The operation, which lasted 56 days, successfully freed dozens of victims held captive by terrorists.According to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who sponsored the motion alongside 108 senators, the rescue mission demonstrated both the resilience of Nigeria’s Armed Forces and the gravity of the security challenges facing the country. He disclosed that Lieutenant F. A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa of the 81 Battalion, and Sergeant Abena John Jerome of the Nigeria Police Force were killed in action, while Lance Corporal Adamu Hussain sustained injuries. The Senate also noted that one of the abducted teachers died in captivity, underscoring the human toll of the attack. Despite this, lawmakers hailed the successful release of the remaining victims as a remarkable achievement that restored hope among Nigerians.Bamidele described the abduction of 39 pupils and seven teachers as “a disturbing expansion of organised criminal activities into the South-West” and “a direct attack on the right of every child to be educated in a safe and secure environment.” He praised President Bola Tinubu for his “decisive leadership and strategic direction” in ordering the deployment of military assets to secure the victims’ release. The Senate commended the bravery of the fallen heroes and urged the Federal Government to promptly pay death benefits, insurance claims, pensions, and other entitlements to their families. Lawmakers also called for intensified military operations against terrorists, kidnappers, and bandits, backed by modern equipment, advanced surveillance technology, and improved welfare for personnel.Senator Fatai Buhari, who seconded the motion, described the abduction day as a “Black Friday” for his district. He recounted visiting the rescued pupils and teachers at the hospital, noting their rapid recovery after enduring weeks of captivity. In its resolutions, the Senate urged Nigerians to support security agencies with timely intelligence and cooperation, stressing that national unity and vigilance are vital in defeating criminal networks.
