The 8th Wonder - Southampton's good run produces a stunning 8-0 / Sunderland

Southampton’s 8-0 victory over Sunderland on Saturday was the ninth time that a team in the Barclays Premier League had scored as many goals in one match and they became the sixth club to do so.

The margin of victory was Southampton’s biggest in a league match since December 1921, when they beat Northampton Town by the same score.

Only one fixture in the history of the Barclays Premier League has a bigger margin of victory, Manchester United’s 9-0 win over Ipswich Town in the 1994/95 season. Then Andrew Cole scored five times, a feat that has never been bettered by a player, although Alan Shearer matched it in Newcastle United’s 8-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the 1999/00 season, while Jermaine Defoe also hit five in Tottenham Hotspur's 9-1 victory over WIgan Athletic.

The match at St Mary’s was not the first time a team had scored eight times with no player scoring more than twice. This was also the case for the previous occasion a club had scored as many goals, when Chelsea beat Aston Villa in the 2012/13 season. For Sunderland, it was their biggest defeat in league football since a 8-0 defeat by Watford in September 1982.
